Abstract: This paper proposes a magnetic sensor-based approach to overhead transmission line fault detection and location. The proposed approach utilizes magnetic flux density measurements obtained using an array of magnetic sensors installed at the ends of a transmission line to measure currenttraveling waves. These measurements are analyzed to detect and locate faults. The scheme was implemented and tested using a transmission line modeled in Electrical Transient Analyzer Program and MATLAB/Simulink. The experimental evaluation validates the high efficiency of the scheme in measuring current traveling waves and accurately detecting and locating faults. Comparative analysis with a generalized traveling wave-based approach highlighted the validity and efficiency of the proposed approach. Across all test scenarios, the method delivered exceptional results, achieving an average percentage error of only 0.02445% in fault locations for various fault types.
